Miss Mullberry (2012 by Kodiac out of Fusaichi Pegasus mare Chaenomeles) won three races over her two and three year old career all over 5 furlongs. She twice came within two lengths of gaining black type and reached a rating of 88 proving herself tough and durable in running 19 times over a 17 month racing career.
Her dam, Chaenomeles, foaled in 2005 out of USA champion 2 year old filly Eliza, was bought at Keeneland yearling sales for $100,000 but was moderate as a racehorse and did not win a race in the UK. Her first foal, Wood Melick (2011 mare by Champs Elysees), did not run and is now a broodmare with a 2015 colt by Thewayyouare and a 2016 filly by Morpheus called Fescue.
Chaenomeles has a 2018 filly by Twilight Son and then visited Vadamos.
This is a very strong, speedy USA family and Eliza produced eight winners from twelve runners including black type performers Miss Doolittle, Country Song, Kilt Rock and Samuel Morse. There are no fewer than 24 broodmares plying their trade under Eliza and undoubtedly the star element is Miss Doolittle (1998 mare by Storm Cat) who counts Dialled In (2008 colt by Mineshaft) amongst her progeny. He won the Group 1 Florida Derby and is now a stallion becoming leading first season sire in the USA in 2016. She has also produced Mambo Master and listed winner Broadway Gold (2002 mare by Seeking For Gold) who herself has gone on to produce Group 1 placed mares R Gypsy Gold and Broadway Alibi as well as Group 3 winner Golden Lad (2010 by Medaglia D'Oro). The latter has also become a stallion in the USA in 2016.
Chaenomeles has two very well bred younger half sisters who have become broodmares. Untoward (2009 mare by Galileo) has a 2014 winning filly by Lemon Drop Kid called Val's Lemon Drop and a 2015 filly by Malibu Moon called Nasq and Justmissedthetrain (2011 mare by Montjeu) who has a 2015 colt by Distorted Humor called The Train and a 2016 filly called Dizzy by Curlin.
The oldest half sister is My Fair Lady (1996 mare by Theatrical) whose most successful offspring was Butters (2004 mare by El Prado). Her first foal is Exciting Prospect (2010 gelding by Distorted Humor) who has won five races and currently plies his trade in Singapore under his new name Vellenex General. In June 2016 Butters had a red letter day when Butterboom (2011 mare by Myboycharlie) and Foxplay (2013 filly by Foxwedge) both won on the same card at Rosehill, Sydney in Aus$85,000 events. Foxplay subsequently won the Group 2 Furious Stakes at Randwick followed by the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes and is clearly the best produce of Butters to date. She then came fourth in the Australian 1000 Guineas and is very talented, going on to win the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes in the Southern Hemisphere autumn of 2017 and finally nailing a Group 1 with a win in the Coolmore Legacy Stakes over 1600m. This was also the first Group 1 win for Foxwedge as a sire.
This family looks well set to continue developing multiple black type performers and Miss Mullberry, a speedy well balanced neat type who just missed out on black type, can play her part in that. She visited Havana Gold in 2016 and produced a correct, strong looking colt by him in February 2017 who has now gone into training with Grant Tuer and is called Two Hearts. After being placed four times in his first six runs he continued his improvement when winning a 6f nursery handicap at Wolverhampton at the end of August 2019 and is now rated 57. Miss Mullberry has had a 2018 filly foal by Mayson, who shares blue hen mare Rafha with Miss Mullberry in her pedigree. Then she was in foal to Twilight Son but unfortunately slipped the foal. 2019 saw her visit Outstrip and she is in foal to him.
As part of our reduction in broodmare numbers we sold Miss Mullberry in July 2019 to Scuderia Cuschieri in Italy. Good luck to them and Miss M!
